The Who's Tommy set for brief Los ANgeles run
The Who's Tommy will return for a two week stand at Los Angeles' Ricardo Montalban Theatre in June, according to Playbill.com.
The new reworking of the Tony Award-winning musical will feature such notables as Nona Hendryx playing the part of "The Acid Queen," Haylie Duff portraying "Sally Simpson," and Susan Egan of Beauty And The Beast fame playing "Mrs. Walker." Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
The new version of Tommy will try to reconnect the stage show with Pete Townshend's original spiritual concept of Tommy, which was inspired by the teachings of Townshend's guru Meher Baba.
The show's director Brian Purcell said in a statement, "We envision a Tommy that takes place inside of Tommy's own head and to track his experience of his story. This gives us an entirely new canvas to present this work, which has meant so much to the three generations that have come up since the album's original release."
The Who's original album Tommy was released in May 1969 and peaked at Number Four on the album charts.
Ken Russell directed the 1975 film version of Tommy, which featured a new score by Townshend and starred Roger Daltrey, Ann-Margret, and Oliver Reed. The film also featured appearances by Jack Nicholson, Tina Turner, Eric Clapton, and Elton John.
The Broadway version of The Who's Tommy ran for over two years on Broadway and won the Tony for director Des McAnuff's direction and Townshend's score, which tied with the score for Kiss Of The Spider Woman.
The Who's Tommy will run from June 18th to the 29th at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Hollywood.
Townshend has been fine tuning his latest theatrical piece The Boy Who Heard Music, which had its premiere performances last July in Poughkeepsie, New York at the Powerhouse Theater at Vassar College. The musical features selections from the Who's most recent album Endless Wire.
