Slash & Alice Cooper to be be honored

Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash and Alice Cooper will be honored at the fourth annual MusiCares MAP Fund benefit concert, scheduled for May 9th, 2008 at the Music Box Theatre in Hollywood, California. Slash will receive the MusiCares From The Heart Award for his friendship and dedication to the purpose and goals of the MusiCares organization, while Cooper will receive the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award for his dedication to and support of the MusiCares MAP Fund and his devotion to helping other addicts with the recovery process. All proceeds from the event will benefit the MAP Fund, which provides members of the music community access to addiction recovery treatment regardless of their financial situation.

Although he's had a few minor relapses, Slash got clean in the mid-'90s and told us that he realized at the time he was headed for trouble: [ Click to listen if you have a backstage pass] "When I was doing all that stuff and I woke up at the hospital enough times or on the kitchen floor or whatever the deal was, there was a point there when all of a sudden I realized that these near-death experiences are too commonplace and I probably shouldn't be here. And I think at that point I figured I probably only have a few more trump cards left, if any, so I figured it's probably time to sort of focus on trying to be a little bit more responsible."

The event will feature performances from Slash, Cooper, Blind Melon and Camp Freddy, the all-star group featuring past and present members of Velvet Revolver, Guns N' Roses, the Cult and Jane's Addiction.

Balcony seating for the event costs $100 per ticket, while floor seating is $1,000 and special private groups of 10 are available for $12,500.

Former Audioslave and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell was last year's recipient of the Stevie Ray Vaughan Award.
