Pearl Jam among "Green" acts
Earth Day came and went on Tuesday (April 22nd), but many music acts are trying to keep environmental awareness alive throughout the year. Billboard has come up with a list of the top 10 acts who are trying to make a difference in their everyday lives and on tour.
Jack Johnson tops the list. He recently had a recording studio built in Los Angeles powered partly by solar panels, and the trucks and buses on his 2008 tour will run on biodiesel fuel. He'll also only play venues that follow his rules on cutting waste and recycling.
Also doing its part for the environment is the Dave Matthews Band, which has teamed with the environmental non-profit organization Reverb to count the CO2 emissions from every stop on its upcoming summer tour.
Pearl Jam members have continually gotten involved in events to make the world greener. Drummer Matt Cameron played a benefit for flood victims in Central Washington in January, while guitarist Stone Gossard helped plant vegetation in a Seattle park recently.
System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian has launched a new web site called skyisover.net to connect fans to environmental and social justice organizations, while working with environmental nonprofit Reverb to ensure that his current solo tour leaves only a small carbon footprint.
Billboard also chose Radiohead because its latest album was released digitally first, which helps save the waste of a physical CD and its packaging. The band has also expressed concern about cutting down fuel and carbon emissions from touring.
Also on the list were Willie Nelson, K.T. Tunstall, Mana, Missy Higgins and the Roots, who gave away signed compost bins to educate people on making the most of their waste.
