The Police near end of tour, plan live DVD and documentary
The Police are in the home stretch of their reunion tour, which wraps August 7th at New York City's Madison Square Garden. Proceeds from the final show will benefit New York City public television stations WNET and WLIW. The B-52's will open the gig, which is being billed as the Police's last concert as a band. The world tour got underway in May 2007 after a reunion performance at the Grammys earlier that year. Drummer Stewart Copeland tells us the trio always looked at this reunion tour as its last: [

While the decision-making was happening -- at various points decisions were made to extend the tour because it was going so well. But no, it was always a finite thing. In the back of our minds, there was always the possibility 'who knows, what if some new material shows up?' You never know. But the mission has always been finite." The Police did attempt to record a new song in the last year. Copeland says they started to record an updated studio version of the "Truth Hits Everybody," but weren't happy with how it was going. But the Police will have a new release soon. A CD/DVD set is in the works featuring live footage and a documentary. Although there's no release date yet, Copeland tells us about what we can expect on the upcoming package: [

We shot it over two nights. There's also the documentary of this tour shot by my son Jordan, who is a much better filmmaker than me. He's the real thing. I sent him to film school, so that I can make films. So part of the DVD is the live show, and the other part is the documentary of this tour, which totally gets right under our skin -- the little bastard. His documentary is called Better Than Therapy." The Police perform in Concord, California on Wednesday, July 16th.
