Rare Jimi Hendrix burned guitar to be auctioned for expected $1 million
A seemingly long-lost guitar that rock icon Jimi Hendrix set on fire during a London concert more than 40 years ago has turned up and will be auctioned off in September, Reuters reports. Hendrix doused the 1965 Fender Stratocaster with lighter fuel and set it alight during a performance at London's Finsbury Astoria in March 1967. Hendrix had to be rushed to the hospital with minor burns to his hands and the somewhat damaged guitar was recovered by his crew. It eventually ended up in the hands of his press officer, Tony Garland, who stored it in his parents' garage, where it remained until being discovered by a nephew last year.
Hendrix, who died in 1970, also famously burned his guitar on stage during the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, but the Finsbury guitar is the only one that remains intact. It's one of the items of rock memorabilia to be auctioned by the Fame Bureau in London on September 4th, and has an estimated worth of about one million dollars.
A previous auction for the Stratocaster Hendrix used at Woodstock fetched $1.8 million.
