Bitter Jack Bruce vs Led Zeppelin
Cream bassist Jack Bruce had unleashed some pretty harsh words for Led Zeppelin. Bruce blasted the band, acting as if the two bands were arch rivals during their heyday -- which they never were. Bruce slammed Zeppelin's 2007 reunion concert to Classic Rock magazine, "Everybody talks about Led Zeppelin, and they played one f***ing gig -- one f***ing lame gig -- while Cream did weeks of gigs (in 2005) -- proper gigs, not just a lame gig like Zeppelin did, with all the (vocal) keys lowered and everything. We played everything in the original keys. F*** off, Zeppelin, you're cr**. You've always been cr** and you'll never be anything else. Cream is 10 times the band that Led Zeppelin is."Bruce went on to recant his comments -- slightly -- by telling Detroit's WCSX, "I was just having some fun with the press gallery, really. The thing about Zeppelin is that obviously it's a little bit of jealousy on my part, or more than a little bit, because the audience was created by Cream and Jimi Hendrix... this sort of very large audience... Then Zeppelin came along and had a very easy ride in that way. We were the pioneers and pioneers don't always get the recognition they deserve, maybe."
He went on to compare Cream's guitar work with Zeppelin's, adding, "Let's face it: Jimmy Page ain't no Eric Clapton, no matter what anybody thinks."
