The Darkness: One Way Ticket To Hell... And Back

Written by The Rock Radio staff, December 2005 © The Rock Radio

At a time when rock bands were in short supply, a glam rock band called The Darkness shook the British music industry off its foundations by delivering the multi-million selling debut album "Permission To Land" in 2003. They were considered to be the most exciting thing to happen in rock music for the last 10 years and their much awaited second album comes in the form of "One Way Ticket To Hell And Back" under the production of Roy Thomas Baker of Bohemian Rhapsody fame.

The album kicks off with the catchy "One Way Ticket To Hell" that boasts a riff that sounds incredibly similar to AC/DC's "Highway To Hell". Following that is "Knockers" that suffers from the silliest refrain ever to be found in a song with "I like what you've done with your hair…oh yeah", but then again, this is hair metal! Other notable songs include the Celtic-inspired "Hazel Eyes" and the hair losing (!!!) heavy rock anthem "Bald".

This album follows the "Permission To Land" successful chemistry of Justin Hawkins' distinctive vocals and his brother Dan's confident guitar play, but with a couple of problems. Firstly, the album feels like an unsuccessful experiment to marry The Darkness' glam rock with Queen's operatic rock and secondly this is a remarkably short album with only 34 minutes worth of songs.

A good album overall, but not as good and fun as "Permission To Land".
